How building collaborative and strategic connections has helped Kate refine her niche and make a difference
Kate from Inside Matters combined her personal experience, her extensive training and a passion to support others to create a defined niche in wellbeing.
It has been her collaborations and connections that have strengthened her business offer and here she shares how she took Inside Matters into a specialized offer making a real difference.
Whatโs your biz?
I am an online Health and Nutrition Coach, specialising in heart rate variability tracking to help clients better understand and manage hope their body's respond to stress, sleep, exercise and daily activities.
I use the visual data of HRV tracking alongside the art of coaching to support clients to gain more clarity and make more informed choices about their health and wellbeing..
Who do you work with? What sets you apart?
My customers are people who are living with stress, fatigue or a chronic illness or trying to prevent or navigate burnout, and who are ready to make changes to their lifestyle to improve their health and wellbeing.
They are tired of โguessingโ whatโs going to work for them, of symptoms not showing up on standard medical tests, and not being able to do what they love in life.
They want to be productive, but they lack the biological "gas in the tank" to sustain their ambitions.
I work with them to identify how their body is responding to their lifestyle choices and what tweaks can improve their health and wellbeing.
What sparked the idea behind your business?
I have my own journey with chronic illness and know what it's like to be dismissed by medical professionals, needing to take control of your health yourself, but not knowing where to start. As my health improved, I decided to use the knowledge and skills I had gained to retrain as a health and nutrition coach, so that I could help others navigate their health more easily.
In 2024, I attended a conference where an inspiring group of ladies presented about Heart Rate Variability (HRV) tracking and instantly knew it was a tool I had to try. The data and information it provided me was a game changer for better understanding my nervous system, my sleep and what was helping or hindering my recovery.
I then invested in utilising this as a tool with clients and have worked with clients with burnout, ME/CFS, Long COVID, Cancer and other conditions.
What does a typical day look like for you as a business owner?
Gosh, this depends on the day as some days I need to pick up my son and take him to sports and others I can work through - I love the flexibility.
My days are a mix of seeing clients online or at home, as I also offer infrared sauna and red light therapy from my home wellness room, and doing the usual behind the scenes work on accounts, marketing, social media, proposals etc and some study - I'm currently studying sports nutrition.
I balance my day by starting with red light therapy, taking a break at during the day to get outside or do a 10 minute breathing session and when I feel I need some more insights, I use my HRV tracker to see where I'm at and if I'm getting enough recovery during the day and night.
What are some of the key milestones in your business journey so far?
I'm most proud of getting to where I am now. When I first started Inside Matters, it was a concept to share my health journey with a 1 page website.
Then I started the infrared sauna and red light therapy part of the business because there were none in West Auckland and I want to use them, so decided to also make them available to others.
At this stage I only had functional capacity to work/study around 10-15 hours per week, so when I started studying it meant very slow progress and just focusing on one thing at a time - I felt a bit like a tortoise! - but I didn't give up.
Now Inside Matters is making a difference with HRV tracking!
What have been some of the biggest challenges you've faced so far?
Getting clients when my business was new, however finding my niche with using heart rate variability tracking to support people with burnout or chronic illness have me a uniqueness that other coaches didn't have.
I'm grateful to have met the amazing ladies that introduced me to this tool.
What are you most excited about in your business right now?
I'm most exciting about the difference that HRV tracking can make to people's lives and how I can grow this as an offering to my clients - I plan to develop an online group HRV tracking programme later in the year.
I have just filmed a video course on 'HRV Tracking for Stress Management, Energy and Balance' for the Connected Wellbeing platform.
Whatโs worked best for you to build brand awareness and get customers?
Building collaborative and strategic connections whether that's with local business, organisations or any other contacts and having a niche offering.
Working with the Recalibrate team has made a difference to my business and for me as a person, as it not only helps my bottom line, but helps reduce the isolation from working alone and has inspired me to improve the way I work and what I can offer my clients.
What is one of the important lessons you've learnt as a business owner? What advice would you share to someone starting out?
Get advice from people you know and trust, don't listen to just what's on social media.
I also engaged a business mentor from Business Mentors NZ which has been super beneficial.
And of course I joined She Owns It, where everyone is really genuine and knowledgeable!
How does being a part of She Owns It help you in your business journey?
Validation, support, accountability, connections, expertise in different areas and gaining knowledge about running a business
โก๏ธ FAST 5:
1. One thing youโd tell your younger self starting out?
Get advice early on from a business mentor or someone who can guide you
2. Your favourite biz or personal development books or podcasts?
Simon Sinek's books and videos
3. How many tabs do you have open right now?
Too many to count
4. A quote you love and why?
"women are not small men" this is said in the context of nutrition and training by Dr Stacey Sims, however I like it for more than that. While I'm all for equality I think its better described as Equity and that doesn't mean we should have to fit into a 'male' world.
