When I first read Denise's biz story I was so impressed by what she was doing in her biz I skimmed over the rest of it. Then I re read it and realised she has 6 children! That is amazing and I am so blown away by what Denise is doing in her business and for our community. Thank you Denise for sharing your story!
Denise owns Healthy Homes: www.healthyhomesnz.co.nz
Tell us about your business. What is the problem that you solve and how do you solve it?
I became a narcotics officer to help fight against the meth problem we have in this county. To help combat this issue, you also need to be able to to understand what it is your fighting against. In light of that, I also train and teach the general public about methamphetamine. Health and safely work place drug testing is becoming a must for all employers. Fully trained in testing and sampling for the workplace was the next step to combat this issue.
Why did you start your business journey?
With having 6 daughters - 3 have left home - and the triplets (17 yrs) will be leaving at some atage. I need to know that they will be going into a clean and healthy enviroment once entering the big wide world. With that in mind and my husband is a licenced builder and does building reports for pre-purchase, they just seem to go hand in hand. 12mths ago we had a phone call one day and was asked to do a drug test with a building report, and it started from there.
What has been your most effective way to get new customers for your business?
Old fashioned face to face always works. Customer service is the key. Give that little bit extra at no charge, and that person will forward your details. I have had calls from all over the North Island because people have given my details out. Giving advise doesnt cost anything but could make someones day.
Which pieces of content are you most proud of, or would you want someone who’s new to your brand to check out first, and why? (no more than three)
I am proud of the fact I have been chosen as 1 of 9 people in NZ to help set up a new organisation for the meth industry. In the space of 12mths i have set up franchise regions and have sold 6 areas. That means, 6 regions have fully trained staff, which is a must within this trade.
Tell us about your business low point. How did you empower yourself to push through it?
Not getting clients would have to be the lowest point when starting. Believe in what your doing, knowing you can make a difference further down the track makes you keep going. Continue to grow by adding new aspects. Create a point of difference from competitors and never be afraid of competition

Being chosen to help setup the new association. To be able to make people aware of this problem and to help when help is needed. To make sure testers are qualified and to knockout the cowboys.
What is your ultimate dream for your business?
To get Healthy Homes NZ Ltd throughtout NZ. To make it a household name.
Share one great business read or resource that a new women in biz should check out:
I can't say I have read anything that has inspired me to start a business. For me it is listening to others how they have made it in life. Associate with people, who have made it in life. Believe in what you are doing. Work on your business, get others to work in your business. One quote from my parents that has always stuck in my head, a failure is a person who gives up - never give up trying and no one can ever call you a failure.
