If you are reading this, you probably want help building a successful online biz.
You have probably tried all the things to make it work!
I have had 2 businesses in 3 countries with millions of dollars in revenue.
So you could say that I know a few things about building a business online.
But in this post I am sharing 10 things I wish I knew BEFORE starting my business (and some of them might surprise you!).
#1 You Need To Follow The Money
I agree that you should do what you love in biz.
And I do what I love every single day!
But if you are going to successfully scale to a 6-figure business, you need to follow the money.
When I started my first business, we had a dream. We had determination. We even put together a business plan and sat in the business registration office in London with a fire in our bellies.
And yet we didn’t make enough money to survive.
Because we didn’t focus on the things that made money.
If you are just starting an online biz, you are going to hear so many different strategies, money-making tactics, and chase so many rainbows. As a fellow rainbow chaser, I encourage you to dream big!
But only when you have narrowed down all the things you need to do in a week/month/year to move your money needle forward.

#2 Biz Can Still Be Hard, Even If Things Are Going Well
The thing is, money is important.
Money is why we are in business. Money let’s us live the life we want. It lets me spend as much time with my family as possible and inspire more and more women everyday.
But even when money is coming in, business can still suck.
Even though I built my dream six-figure business in a year, life isn’t perfect.
Since starting She Owns It, I became a mum to an energetic little girl.
Then 12 months ago, after a long journey with IVF, miscarriage and heartbreak, we welcomed another little bundle of love into the world.
All the money in the world can’t prepare you for the crazy journey you are going to go through running a business and living your life at the same time.
If you take one thing away from this post, make it this one.
I want you to succeed! I want you to have all the financial opportunities that come from building a successful online biz.
But I also want you to love deeply and be thankful for everything you have right now.
#3 Some Strategies Work Better Than Others
This might seem straightforward and obvious to some of you.
However, huge parts of my business were trial and error!
I took the time to figure out
It seems easy to look at businesses like mine and try to mirror the strategies.
However you wouldn’t see the time, effort and mindset shifts I went through to get there!
It’s OK to take the time to figure out what your ideal customers want. If you come from a place of service, you will quickly figure out what strategies your customers respond to.
#4 If You Don't Have A Plan, You Won't Grow
You need to start with your dream. Always.
If you don’t know where you are going, you can’t make a plan to get there.
If you don’t have a plan, you can’t create action steps.
If you don’t take deliberate action, you will stay where you are for a very long time!
This is why the She Owns It quarterly planning sessions are so important!
Together, we figure out what worked well in the last quarter, what our goals are, and then come up with actionable steps to get there.
My dream biz is all about creating a life where I get to spend time with my family. It’s a business where I get to inspire women, work on my own terms, and dance with my kids in the kitchen every morning.
And all of this starts with setting my goals for the quarter.

#5 Sometimes, Passion Isn't Enough
“This isn't working.”
My KiwiOz business partner and I looked at each other with serious eyes and didn't know what more to say.
We'd tried everything. We'd worked SO hard. Thrown all of our spare time, our money, our hearts into our business.
But month after month, no matter what we tried, the money wasn't coming in.
We simply weren't making enough to pay the bills, let alone ourselves or to invest in improving the business.
We were struggling to stay alive, and we didn't know what to do.
We had spend years building our recruitment business from the ground up. We were passionate, clever, capable.
We had a GREAT idea, which we eventually scaled to 7-figures.
But the passion wasn’t quite enough.
I want you to build the business of your dreams. That fire in your heart? It is telling you what to do.
However, I wish someone had told me that you need to match passion with a money-building strategy!
#6 You Don't Have To Do (Or Know!) Everything
This is probably the #1 biggest mistake we made when we first started our business!
We thought that we had to do everything, know everything, and never ask for help.
Because we were BUSINESS OWNERS.
It was almost like we had to prove that we could do it on our own.
Also, we had like NO money to put back into the business.
But everything changed when we admitted we needed help to grow.
We got systems in place. We outsourced the things that we didn’t want to do. We got super clear on what our job was and what could be give to other people to do. We reached out to other business owners for support and insight.
That’s when we started to really see growth.
And that’s exactly why I created She Owns It.
I have been exactly where you are now. I was scared to invest, had no one to ask questions, and wasted so much time trying to do it all alone.
One of our members, Nicky Perry from AwesoME Inc. sums my vision up perfectly:
#7 Your Business Is Allowed To Be Simple
Starting a business doesn’t mean that you need complicated systems.
This is the beauty of starting a business online!
Once you have set up simple systems marketing, customer care, brand awareness and consistent growth, you get to enjoy a life less chaotic.
I used to struggle with all the things.
I have a super straightforward funnel that serves my ideal clients, builds my email list, and creates awareness around my brand.
And I only work 2 days a week!
Focus on creating simple systems and straightforward offers, and a year from now you will be reaping the rewards.
#8 It's OK To Change Direction
I wish someone had told me this when I first started in business at 22!
Like I said above, my business partner and I had so much passion.
We put so much heart, time, energy (and savings!) into our business.
This makes admitting defeat even more heart-breaking!
But if you are at the point where you
Then I want you to know that at ANY POINT IN TIME, you can take a deep breath and change direction.
Even if it is scary.
Even if it means starting some things from scratch.
You are in control of your business and your life, and there will always be women in the She Owns It community who are ready to support you.
#9 Some Feelings Never Go Away
I’ve had my own business since I joined the workforce in 2002.
Three countries, two businesses, thousands of clients and millions of dollars in revenue.
And I still get scared.
I still get overwhelmed. I still have weeks and months where I feel like I haven’t done enough.
This is something that I remind all of the women in the She Owns It membership: all of us, including me, are on a journey!
#10 You Actually CAN Have That Life You Are Dreaming Of
I want you to imagine your life a year from now.
5 years from now.
10 years from now.
A lot of people have the same sort of dreams: freedom, financial security, family, travel.
But there is a key difference between the ones who make it in biz and the ones that become a statistic.
The ones that make it BELIEVE that they will actually get to their goals.
If you imagine your dream life, but you don’t actually think that it can be a reality for you, then you are going to struggle to ever get there.
I’ve made plenty of mistakes along the way.
I got stuck in a biz that didn’t make money for years.
I had personal struggles that stopped me in my tracks.
And with the right tools I might have exploded my success much faster!
However my desire to live life on my own terms kept me going.
If you knew that your mindset was the only thing standing in the way of your six-figure business, you would work on it every single day!
So don't edit your day dreams. They are going to keep you going when life tells you to stop.
I never want you to be alone in your business journey. I want you to know that everything you want is waiting for you- if you are brave enough to make a change.
If you are ready to stop struggling by yourself like I did for years and start building a dream business with never-ending support, the She Owns It membership is now open for a limited time. We can't wait to love and support you on your journey!
